Get help from the AI

PegOut ships with a custom-trained neural network that plays cribbage at expert level. Three ways to use it, all enabled in the :

1. Play against the model

Every Difficulty plays via the same expert solver.Hard always takes the best line; Medium and Easy deliberately mix in weaker plays — but their mistakes look human (the second-best line, not a random card), so beginners aren't crushed.

2. See the AI's pick before you commit

Turn on AI hints. During discarding, the model highlights its preferred 2-card discard; during pegging, it highlights the play it would make. You can follow the suggestion or override it.

Lighter heuristic hints are also available if you want suggestions without loading the full neural network.

3. Get graded after every hand

At the end of each game you see a play-quality grade comparing your decisions to the AI's choices — separate scores for discarding and pegging plus a combined score. The grade isn't tied to whether you won.

Keep the game flowing

A handful of settings smooth over the parts of cribbage that get tedious in a digital game. All in the .

  • Auto-go — when none of your cards are playable, automatically say "go" instead of waiting for you to click. The game pauses ~500ms first so you can see why you're passing.
  • Manual scoring (single player only) — count your own hands instead of having PegOut score them for you. Good practice for in-person play. Default is automatic.
  • Animation speed — slow, normal, or fast. Or disable animations entirely.
  • Show game log — keep the play-by-play log visible in a side panel.

See more about your position

Two display options give you more context during play, both in the .

  • Win expectancy — a live percentage on the scoreboard showing your odds of winning given the current score and dealership. Two-player games only.
  • Highlight my lane — dims the opponent's pegs on the board so your own progress is easier to track at a glance.

Make it yours

The includes a few cosmetic options.

  • Felt theme — multiple background colors for the playing surface.
  • Cribbage board theme — several wood-and-metal board styles to choose from.
  • Card back — the design on the back of every card in the deck.

Multiplayer tips

  • Share the room code — every room has a 4-character code. The host's screen shows it; share it as text, link, or QR code (also on the host screen).
  • 2-, 3-, or 4-player matches — pick the player count when creating the room. 4-player games are team-based, with the host setting partners in the lobby.
  • Reconnect freely — closing the tab or losing network doesn't end the game. Reopening the same URL puts you back in your seat. Rooms stick around for 24 hours of inactivity.
  • Rematch — after a finished game, any player can offer a rematch and the others accept. The crib rotates to the next dealer.

Install as an app

PegOut is a Progressive Web App. On most browsers and devices you can install it for offline single-player and a native-feeling launch from your home screen or dock.

  • iOS / iPadOS — open PegOut in Safari, tap the Share button, then "Add to Home Screen."
  • Android — Chrome should prompt you with an "Install app" option. Otherwise, menu → "Install app."
  • Desktop — Chrome, Edge, and Brave show an install icon in the address bar.

Installed PegOut runs offline against the computer, syncs your stats locally, and opens without browser chrome.

Your stats

Every game is recorded locally — no account required. The Stats page (in this menu) tracks:

  • Wins, losses, and win rate
  • Skunks and double skunks (both directions)
  • Average hand and crib points
  • Your best and worst hands

Stats are stored in your browser's localStorage and don't sync across devices. Clearing browser data resets them.
